Main Info
Tuol Sleng, formerly S-21, was the most infamous of Cambodia’s 189 known interrogation centers during the Khmer Rouge regime. Once a school, it became a brutal prison where 14,000 to 17,000 detainees, mostly from the regime’s own ranks, were held in primitive brick cells. Only 12 are believed to have survived. Prisoners were meticulously documented with mug shots and subjected to torture methods like electric shocks, beatings, and waterboarding to extract false confessions of espionage for the CIA, Vietnam, or purged Khmer Rouge officials. Today, Tuol Sleng stands as a chilling reminder of Cambodia’s tragic past.
