Description
Koh Ker was a royal capital under Jayavarman IV in the tenth century. The UNESCO property includes a planned sacred landscape of temples and water features, with the Rahal reservoir helping make sense of the scattered monuments.
Prasat Thom and its pyramid are one major stop within this wider complex. Pram, Neang Khmau, Chen, Krachap, Banteay Pir Choan, Damrei, Khnar and the linga sanctuaries each deserve their own identity and visit time. The National Authority reported conservation activity at several Koh Ker monuments in September 2026.
Site reference ↗How to Get There
Reach the Koh Ker group in the Srayang area by car from Siem Reap or Preah Vihear. Koh Ker Temple Complex is a stop within that wider archaeological area. Keep your vehicle for travel between the monument groups and continue on the cleared visitor paths on foot.
Road and transport context ↗Admission
Angkor Enterprise lists the Koh Ker temples one-day pass at US$15. It is separate from the Angkor temples pass; transport between the temple groups is additional.
Official ticket prices ↗Things to Do
Use an overview map or local guide to connect the temples with the Rahal and the royal-capital story. Combine the pyramid with a few contrasting brick and sandstone shrines instead of assuming every monument fits a quick stop.
Site reference ↗What to Eat
Eat a rice or noodle meal in your overnight town and carry lunch and water for a longer temple or forest outing. Do not eat among archaeological remains.
Where to Stay
Preah Vihear town suits the central province, Sra Aem the northern temple approach, and the Srayang area the Koh Ker group. Choose the base for the actual temple you intend to visit.
Best Time to Visit
Go in the cooler morning or late afternoon. Dry-season sandbars and high-water river views are different experiences, and a sandy bank is not proof of safe swimming.
Before You Go
Use authorised paths, respect barriers and leave bricks, carvings and objects undisturbed. Do not climb unstable masonry. Dress respectfully around active shrines and ask before photographing worshippers.
