Description
Phnom Chhngok is a limestone cave-temple destination in the countryside east of Kampot. An old brick sanctuary stands within the cave, giving the visit both a geological and religious character. Spellings vary widely, including Phnom Chhnok and Phnom Chhnork. Enjoy the contrast between the open countryside, the hill approach and the shaded cave interior without treating fragile formations or worship areas as climbing equipment.
Hello Angkor — Phnom Chhngok cave temple ↗How to Get There
From Phnom Penh, take a bus, minivan or car to Kampot on the National Road 3 corridor. Tuk-tuks and cars connect the town with nearby countryside stops.
Continue toward Kampot for Phnom Chhngok Cave Temple. The road journey reaches the local approach or hill base; climbing, cave and mountain sections continue on foot. A driver for the outward journey does not replace the return transport.
Road and transport context ↗Admission
A hill walk, a religious site, parking and a guided trek may have separate charges. A reliable current tariff for this destination is not published in the reviewed sources.
Things to Do
Choose activities that are open and suitable for your group; confirm current arrangements before starting.
Cave sanctuary
Observe the brick shrine respectfully and keep off the structure.
Limestone formations
Look closely without touching or marking the rock.
Countryside views
Pause on established paths around the approach when conditions permit.
What to Eat
Try seafood with Kampot pepper, rice dishes or local noodle soup. The old town and riverfront give you more meal choices than a remote waterfall or cave.
Where to Stay
The old-town and riverfront areas of Kampot make a convenient base for restaurants and day trips. Countryside and riverside lodges suit visitors who prefer to stay outside town.
Best Time to Visit
Start early for cooler walking and clearer planning around the return. November to February is generally more comfortable for an exposed climb; wet-season trails and cave floors can be slippery.
Before You Go
Bring a torch and wear shoes with grip. Respect religious customs and any local guide rules. Ask about the total guide or entrance charge before beginning, and do not follow unmarked cave passages alone.
