Description

Phnom Sampeau, also written Sampov or Sampeou, combines a limestone hill, Buddhist worship sites, caves and views across the surrounding plain. The bat emergence is watched near dusk from outside the roost.

Teng Khloun and Lakhon are names recorded among the hill’s caves. Ask a knowledgeable local guide to identify the permitted route and distinguish these caves from the bat roost and the memorial caves connected with Khmer Rouge atrocities. A general hill ticket does not establish that every cave is open.

How to Get There

Reach Battambang by bus, minivan or car along National Road 5. Tuk-tuks and cars connect the city with nearby temples and countryside stops.

Continue toward Phnom Sampov commune, Banan district for Phnom Sampeau & Bat Caves. The road journey reaches the local approach or hill base; climbing, cave and mountain sections continue on foot. A driver for the outward journey does not replace the return transport.

Admission

A hill walk, a religious site, parking and a guided trek may have separate charges. A reliable current tariff for this destination is not published in the reviewed sources.

Things to Do

Visit the permitted shrines and viewpoints in daylight, with a guide for cave identification and historical context. Treat memorial areas quietly. Watch the bat flight from a designated outside viewpoint without lights, noise or attempts to enter the roost.

What to Eat

Try rice noodles, grilled fish and seasonal fruit in Battambang. The central market and riverfront area offer a practical meal stop before a countryside outing.

Where to Stay

Central Battambang and the Sangkae riverfront are useful bases for food, galleries and day trips. Samlout and the western districts are longer journeys beyond the city.

Best Time to Visit

Start early for cooler walking and clearer planning around the return. November to February is generally more comfortable for an exposed climb; wet-season trails and cave floors can be slippery.

Before You Go

Stay on permitted cave paths with suitable footwear and a light when needed. Respect memorials and worshippers. Avoid flash or lights directed at bats, do not handle wildlife and keep a clear route for people returning after dark.
