Description

Phnom Santuk is a cultural and natural site in Santuk district, south of Kampong Thom town. A long stairway leads through the wooded hillside towards pagoda buildings and shrines.

The hill is known for reclining Buddha figures carved into rock and other Buddhist monuments. It remains a place of worship, so a visit is best approached with the same respect as an active pagoda.

How to Get There

Take a Phnom Penh–Siem Reap bus or minivan and get off in Kampong Thom, or drive along National Road 6. Continue to countryside destinations by car or local road transport.

Continue toward Kokoh area, Santuk district for Phnom Santuk. The road journey reaches the local approach or hill base; climbing, cave and mountain sections continue on foot. A driver for the outward journey does not replace the return transport.

Admission

A hill walk, a religious site, parking and a guided trek may have separate charges. A reliable current tariff for this destination is not published in the reviewed sources.

Things to Do

Follow an open stairway or a locally confirmed approach, taking breaks as needed. View the carved Buddhas and the permitted temple grounds without interrupting worship.

Look out over the surrounding countryside from an authorised viewpoint. Ask locally about easier alternatives if the climb is unsuitable for someone in your group.

What to Eat

Try freshwater fish, rice dishes and seasonal fruit in town. Pack lunch and water for a longer archaeological or wetland excursion.

Where to Stay

Stay around Kampong Thom town and the Stung Sen riverfront for restaurants and transport. A community forest or lake overnight is a separate programme.

Best Time to Visit

Start early for cooler walking and clearer planning around the return. November to February is generally more comfortable for an exposed climb; wet-season trails and cave floors can be slippery.

Before You Go

Dress respectfully near shrines and choose a route that suits your group. Keep children away from exposed edges and descend with enough daylight to return.
