Description

The Ramsar site formally known as the Middle Stretches of Mekong River North of Stung Treng protects an island-rich reach of the Mekong. It was designated in 1999 and includes trees adapted to seasonal flooding.

The flooded forest is a living and changing habitat. Research published in 2026 documents forest loss and altered river flows, so older photographs and accounts should not be taken as a promise of the vegetation or channels visible today.

How to Get There

Reach Stung Treng by bus, minivan or car on the National Road 7 corridor. Mekong communities, Siem Pang and the waterfall area need onward road or boat journeys.

Use Mekong north of Stung Treng town as the local approach area for Stung Treng Ramsar Site & Flooded Forest. Continue beyond the road base on an established guided programme; forest tracks and wildlife routes are different from public town roads.

Admission

Guided conservation and community programmes are booked as activities, with transport, guiding, meals or overnight stays priced according to the chosen programme. A sanctuary boundary is not an unrestricted public entrance. A reliable single admission price is not published in the reviewed material.

Things to Do

Take a guided river trip to observe permitted forest channels, islands and bird habitat. Ask the guide to explain seasonal flooding and local conservation without approaching nests or entering restricted areas.

What to Eat

Try cooked freshwater fish with rice in town, and buy packaged local dried-fish products as appropriate. Carry meals and water for a river or forest programme.

Where to Stay

Stung Treng town is the main base for food and onward travel. Koh Han and other community stays are separate bookings; Siem Pang programmes need their own overnight plan.

Best Time to Visit

November to February usually brings cooler weather for forest walks. Start wildlife outings early; wet-season rain can make tracks slower and change which routes can be used.

Before You Go

Use a local skipper, wear a properly fitted lifejacket and confirm the weather and return landing. Respect conservation zones and leave trees, wildlife and fishing equipment undisturbed.
