Description

Banteay Chhmar is a major Angkorian temple complex in Thma Puok district. Built during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, it preserves carved faces and long sandstone reliefs showing battles, religious imagery and scenes of daily life.

The main enclosure belongs to a much wider landscape of moats, reservoirs and satellite sanctuaries. A community guide can help connect these features with the surrounding villages. Banteay Chhmar is on Cambodia’s UNESCO Tentative List; it is not an inscribed World Heritage Site.

How to Get There

Travel north from Serei Saophoan toward Thma Puok and Banteay Chhmar by car or local road transport. The main temple and Banteay Torp are separate stops, so keep your vehicle for the day rather than expecting to walk between them.

Road and transport context ↗

Admission

Check the current temple ticket and whether it covers satellite temples and Banteay Torp. Guide, transport, meals and homestay services may be charged separately; agree on the inclusions with the community team.

Things to Do

Follow the outer galleries with a guide to examine battle scenes and the Avalokiteshvara reliefs. Pause at the face towers and compare the surviving architecture with the fallen stone blocks.

Add a village walk, a satellite temple or a community activity if time and access permit. Arrange these with the community rather than treating every rural track as a public visitor route.

What to Eat

Freshwater fish, rice and noodle dishes are practical town meals. Carry water and a packed lunch for a longer temple or birdwatching outing.

Where to Stay

Serei Saophoan is the central town base. Banteay Chhmar community accommodation is better suited to an overnight focused on the temple; Poipet is a separate border-city stay.

Best Time to Visit

Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for exposed courtyards and climbs. The cooler, drier months from November to February suit longer heritage walks.

Before You Go

Keep to permitted paths and do not climb unstable masonry or touch fragile carvings. Dress respectfully around shrines and ask before photographing residents. Allow enough time for the return journey or a confirmed overnight stay.
