Kampong Khleang Floating and Stilted Village

Description

Kampong Khleang combines tall stilted houses, floating homes and waterways at the edge of Tonle Sap.

The settlement changes greatly between water seasons. A community-linked receiving team can explain the current route and village life.

How to Get There

Travel east from Siem Reap on National Road 6 toward the Kampong Khleang turn-off, then south to the lakeside settlement. A car is practical for the land section. At higher water, boats reach more of the settlement; at low water, stilted houses and village roads are more exposed.

Admission

Boat trips and community or conservation activities are separate services. A reliable fixed tariff for this whole area is not published in the reviewed sources; the boat type, duration and programme determine the total.

Things to Do

Take a community-led boat route through the navigable village or wetland, observe the changing water landscape and watch birds without approaching nests. Houses and fishing platforms remain private working spaces.

What to Eat

Try rice noodles, amok or a rice-and-vegetable meal around the Old Market or Wat Bo. Carry water and a snack for temple or lake excursions.

Where to Stay

Stay around the Old Market, Wat Bo or central Siem Reap River for restaurants and onward transport. Angkor and the lake villages are separate excursions from the city.

Best Time to Visit

Higher water in the rainy season opens more flooded-forest routes; lower water exposes banks, stilts and longer land approaches. Early morning is useful for birdwatching and cooler boat travel.

Before You Go

Wear a suitable life jacket for boat travel, shade your head and protect electronics from spray. Keep distance from birds and fishing gear, and take your rubbish back to shore.
