Description

Phnom Oudong rises above the landscape of Cambodia’s former royal capital. Follow the established hill paths to Buddhist shrines, royal stupas and views across the surrounding plains.

The Ancient City of Oudong appears on Cambodia’s UNESCO Tentative List. Phnom Preah Reach Troap and the Atthaross / Edtharaes names belong to this hill landscape; they do not create separate Kandal destinations.

How to Get There

From Phnom Penh, travel north on National Road 5 toward the Oudong area, then continue to the Phnom Preah Reach Troap hill base. A car or tuk-tuk reaches the base; the stupas and hilltop religious grounds are reached by steps.

Admission

A hill walk, a religious site, parking and a guided trek may have separate charges. A reliable current tariff for this destination is not published in the reviewed sources.

Things to Do

Walk among the royal stupas, look closely at their decoration and pause at open viewpoints. Ask a caretaker which religious interiors are open.

What to Eat

Rice noodles, grilled freshwater fish and rice dishes suit a riverside outing. Carry small riel notes for village food stalls and river crossings.

Where to Stay

Phnom Penh is a practical base for a Kandal day trip. Takhmao is useful for the southern districts; a riverside resort stay needs a separate accommodation booking.

Best Time to Visit

Start early for cooler walking and clearer planning around the return. November to February is generally more comfortable for an exposed climb; wet-season trails and cave floors can be slippery.

Before You Go

Wear clothes suitable for worship, carry water for the climb and leave masonry and offerings untouched. Use handrails where available and keep food away from animals.
