Description

Phnom Samkos is a major mountain landscape within a protected forest setting in the western Cardamoms. The Ministry of Environment’s zoning material describes conservation, community and other management zones rather than one unrestricted recreation area.

The mountain, sanctuary and community receiving points have different purposes. A published wildlife record does not guarantee a sighting or visitor access to its recording location.

Place and local context ↗

How to Get There

Reach Pursat on National Road 5 by bus, minivan or car. National Road 55 is the inland mountain corridor toward Pramaoy and Veal Veng; lake villages lie on the Tonle Sap side.

Use Western Cardamoms / Veal Veng as the local approach area for Phnom Samkos & Sanctuary Landscape. Continue beyond the road base on an established guided programme; forest tracks and wildlife routes are different from public town roads.

Admission

Guided conservation and community programmes are booked as activities, with transport, guiding, meals or overnight stays priced according to the chosen programme. A sanctuary boundary is not an unrestricted public entrance. A reliable single admission price is not published in the reviewed material.

Things to Do

Learn about the forest and its conservation through a permitted guided visit or reliable educational material. Observe wildlife quietly from an appropriate distance.

What to Eat

Try locally grown citrus when in season, freshwater fish and rice dishes. Stock up with water and picnic supplies before driving into the western mountains.

Where to Stay

Pursat town is useful for the riverfront and lowland heritage sites. Pramaoy and Osoam suit western mountain itineraries; they are separate bases from the lake villages.

Best Time to Visit

November to February usually brings cooler weather for forest walks. Start wildlife outings early; wet-season rain can make tracks slower and change which routes can be used.

Before You Go

Obtain permission, a confirmed route and suitable support before entering the forest. Avoid informal shortcuts, leave wildlife undisturbed and check current route restrictions.
