Description
The Sangkae, also written Sangker, runs through Battambang’s centre and provides an easy setting for a short walk, cafés and evening local life. This guide covers the accessible riverfront and the old bridge area as one town outing.
The Old Stone Bridge, Spean Thmor Chas, stands near the former provincial hall. Tourism-association material dates it to 1916, noting 1917 in some records, and reports a ban on cars and motorbikes since 2020. Current pedestrian access must still be checked at the barriers.
Site reference ↗How to Get There
Reach Battambang by bus, minivan or car along National Road 5. Tuk-tuks and cars connect the city with nearby temples and countryside stops.
For Sangkae Riverfront & Old Stone Bridge, continue toward Central Battambang riverfront. A car or motorbike covers the local road section; use the established approach for the final walk and keep a return vehicle for a countryside outing.
Road and transport context ↗Admission
Public streets and accessible riverside spaces can be explored independently. Shops, galleries, cafés and paid activities set their own access and purchase conditions.
Things to Do
View the bridge from permitted ground, enjoy the riverfront and stop at an open café. Keep walks flexible when high water, works or events restrict a section of the bank.
Site reference ↗What to Eat
Try rice noodles, grilled fish and seasonal fruit in Battambang. The central market and riverfront area offer a practical meal stop before a countryside outing.
Where to Stay
Central Battambang and the Sangkae riverfront are useful bases for food, galleries and day trips. Samlout and the western districts are longer journeys beyond the city.
Best Time to Visit
Morning or late afternoon is comfortable for outdoor city walking. Plan evening entertainment around the dated programme rather than a general daytime sightseeing schedule.
Before You Go
Keep back from unprotected river edges and respect any high-water or works closure. Use a permitted pedestrian crossing and keep cars and motorbikes off the historic bridge. Ask before entering nearby administrative or private grounds.
