Description

Wat Phnom is a religious and historical hill in central Phnom Penh. The pagoda, surrounding grounds and city origin stories make it a compact cultural outing.

The hill remains a living place of worship. Its setting differs from the large temple complexes elsewhere in Cambodia; treat religious activities as the priority.

What to Eat

Rice-noodle soup, rice with grilled pork, fresh fruit and iced coffee are easy choices in the capital. Eat in the neighbourhood around the visit rather than inside worship or memorial buildings.

Where to Stay

Riverside and Daun Penh put the palace, museum and central riverfront within one city stay. BKK1 and Tonle Bassac are useful alternatives for restaurants and evening outings.

Best Time to Visit

Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for exposed courtyards and climbs. The cooler, drier months from November to February suit longer heritage walks.
