Description
Kampi is a recognised dolphin-watching location on the Mekong upstream of Kratie. The animals surface briefly, so a visit is a patient river outing rather than a scheduled wildlife performance.
The deep pool and the nearby Kampi Rapids are different stops. Keep the boat trip separate from a picnic at the rapids and leave time for each. Sightings cannot be promised.
Site reference ↗How to Get There
Travel north from Kratie along the Mekong road to Kampi by tuk-tuk, car or motorbike. The dolphin departure area and the rapids recreation area are different stops. Dolphin viewing continues by boat; a vehicle gets you to the river access, not onto the water.
Road and transport context ↗Admission
Check the current boat tariff at the landing, including how group size affects the charge and whether the quote includes all required entry charges. No historical price is presented as a current fare.
Things to Do
Take a guided boat trip and watch the water quietly for surfacing dolphins. Ask the operator to explain the local viewing rules and avoid pressuring the driver to chase animals for a photograph.
Site reference ↗What to Eat
Try sticky rice cooked in bamboo from Thma Krae and locally grown pomelo when available. Kratie town is the practical place for a cooked meal before a river excursion.
Where to Stay
Kratie riverfront is the main base for restaurants and dolphin-area outings. Koh Trong offers a quieter island stay reached by a separate local boat.
Best Time to Visit
Morning or late afternoon is comfortable for outdoor city walking. Plan evening entertainment around the dated programme rather than a general daytime sightseeing schedule.
Before You Go
Wear a life jacket, follow the boat crew’s instructions and keep hands and rubbish out of the river. Do not feed, pursue or attempt to swim with dolphins. Choose quiet observation and respect viewing distances.
