Description
The rapids at Kampi are a riverside leisure stop known for shallow channels, rocks and seasonal picnic shelters. Their appearance and the extent of usable shoreline depend on the Mekong’s water level.
This is separate from the dolphin-watching boat landing nearby. Visiting the rapids does not include a dolphin trip or establish that the water is safe for swimming.
Site reference ↗How to Get There
Travel north from Kratie along the Mekong road to Kampi by tuk-tuk, car or motorbike. The dolphin departure area and the rapids recreation area are different stops. Dolphin viewing continues by boat; a vehicle gets you to the river access, not onto the water.
Road and transport context ↗Admission
Entry, parking and activities can be charged separately at recreation sites. A reliable current tariff is not published in the reviewed sources; keep a separate cash allowance for the visit rather than relying on an old quoted price.
Things to Do
Relax in an available shelter, order a meal from an open local vendor and enjoy the river scenery. Walk only where the ground and current conditions allow, keeping clear of fast channels and slippery rocks.
Site reference ↗What to Eat
Try sticky rice cooked in bamboo from Thma Krae and locally grown pomelo when available. Kratie town is the practical place for a cooked meal before a river excursion.
Where to Stay
Kratie riverfront is the main base for restaurants and dolphin-area outings. Koh Trong offers a quieter island stay reached by a separate local boat.
Best Time to Visit
Water flow is usually stronger during and after the rainy season, while the dry season can expose more rock. Visit in daylight and avoid the stream during heavy rain or a sudden rise in water level.
Before You Go
Treat this as a river with variable currents. Ask staff about permitted areas, supervise children and avoid entering fast water. Do not assume a lifeguard is present.
