Description

The old Roka Kandal pagoda stands by the river south of central Kratie. Field documentation dates it to the eighteenth century and records its timber pillars, roof structure and carved details.

A newer monastery stands across the road. The old building has also been used for local crafts during tourism seasons, but an open craft shop or demonstration should be confirmed for the intended day.

How to Get There

Reach Kratie by bus, minivan or car from Phnom Penh. Use the town as a base for the Mekong road toward Kampi and Sambor; river islands require their own crossing.

For Wat Roka Kandal — Old Pagoda, continue toward Roka Kandal, southern Kratie town. A car or motorbike covers the local road section; use the established approach for the final walk and keep a return vehicle for a countryside outing.

Admission

A reliable current ticket price for this site is not published in the reviewed sources. Keep transport and any parking or guide service separate from admission; voluntary religious donations are not the same as a published ticket.

Things to Do

Look at the carved pediments and structural timber where access is permitted. Ask about current local crafts and buy from an open stall without assuming that weaving demonstrations run daily.

What to Eat

Try sticky rice cooked in bamboo from Thma Krae and locally grown pomelo when available. Kratie town is the practical place for a cooked meal before a river excursion.

Where to Stay

Kratie riverfront is the main base for restaurants and dolphin-area outings. Koh Trong offers a quieter island stay reached by a separate local boat.

Best Time to Visit

Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for exposed courtyards and climbs. The cooler, drier months from November to February suit longer heritage walks.

Before You Go

Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where requested and keep quiet around worshippers. Ask before photographing people or interiors. Leave carvings, bricks and religious objects undisturbed.
